ABSURD GROOVE: TEEBEE & CALYX [ KRZYSZTOFORY | KRAKOW ]

Calyx & TeeBee’s first collaborations emerged in 2004, but their history and friendship dates back to 1998 when they were introduced as label-mates of the legendary Moving Shadow imprint. In the following years the two artists accumulated an astounding back-catalogue of releases on a glittering array of DnB’s most respected labels. In 1999 TeeBee founded what was to become one of the scene’s most reputable labels: ‘Subtitles’. The imprint grew from being a home for his own productions to a multi-artist label that is now highly revered by producers and DJs alike as a flag-bearer for the cutting-edge of forward-thinking Drum and Bass.
When Calyx and TeeBee finally decided it was time to work together in the studio, the first two tracks they produced (‘Follow The Leader’ and ‘Cyclone’) were highly acclaimed by the music press and witnessed huge DJ support across the scene. With both tracks featuring on Calyx’s debut album ‘No Turning Back’, they went on to gain enormous exposure for the duo as Rockstar games used their music as the soundtracks for a global advertising campaign for the latest installment of the colossal ‘Midnight Club’ series; with ‘Follow The Leader’ featuring on a lengthy TV commercial that gained huge publicity by being given blanket prime-time coverage for several months in every world territory. In 2006 Calyx & TeeBee produced one of their landmark releases of the year: ‘The Quest’ which featured on the historic 50th release for Subtitles. Having also written ‘The Shape Of Things To Come’ for Renegade Hardware’s 10 year anniversary album ‘Above The Game’, the duo then decided it was time to embark on the long journey to produce their debut collaborative album: ‘Anatomy’.
2007 proved to be a phenomenal year for the duo with the launch of their new label ‘Momentum Music’, marking its first release with an entire album of Calyx & Teebee collaborations released on 4-piece Vinyl and CD. The Anatomy LP proved to be one of the most highly anticipated albums in DnB for many years. With every track gaining massive DJ support from all the scene’s top players, the album topped sales charts for weeks on end and was followed by a massive album World Tour of back-to-back Calyx & TeeBee sets.
Fast forward to 2008 and Calyx & TeeBee are now working towards completing their second collaborative album – an LP which will see them branch into new genres with one half of the LP being DnB and the other half comprising a wide range of styles. Expect a Vinyl triple pack of the 6 DnB cuts, and all 12 tracks released on CD and mp3. Two mouth-watering remixes of tracks from the Anatomy LP are currently in progress by 2 highly-acclaimed artists and will feature on a Momentum 12” prior to the new LP’s release. In addition to their ventures into new styles of music, Calyx & TeeBee have been pushing for more of their joint sets to feature 6 decks and 2 mixers, with both DJ’s in action simultaneously. They first performed with this setup at a legendary event in Moscow, October 2007. Since then have made a further 14 performances on 6 to 8 decks and 2 mixers. With each gig they have discovered more permutations, possibilities and ideas whilst developing an understanding that generates both spontaneous and choreographed moments. Calyx & TeeBee find it by far the most exciting, enjoyable and expressive way they have ever performed and are now looking to make every joint booking feature this setup. Rest assured, you will never have heard or seen a DnB performance like it!

Patrick Williams aka RAGE got introduced into the world of music via his family home were it was forever present this gave him a healthy love for all forms of music. Checking out his own family roots he came across the legendary Reggae imprint ‘Studio 1’ home to Bob Marley and Rage’s Uncle who performed & produced under the artist name of ‘Michigan & Smiley’. Seeing them tour the UK in the 80’s inspired him to start writing lyrics. Continuing to listening to Reggae, Jazz, Soul, Funk, Rock & Hip-Hop and growing up amongst the Hip-Hop movement of the late 70’s & early 80’s confirmed his interests in rapping & performing whilst listening to artists like; Doug-e-Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Eric B & Rakim, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Tribe called Quest… too name but a few!
Rage’s own career started out in the early 90’s where there was a massive underground music scene developing in & around East London where he was born & raised. Friends of his we’re putting on parties & setting-up local pirate radio stations, knowing of his interest they naturally asked him to host their shows & parties…this was just the beginning for Rage.
By the mid 90’s Rage had made a reputable name for himself within the UK Drum & Bass scene, His first residency was at one of the UK longest running rave events ‘Desire’ this gave him time to develop his style & lyrical flow. Soon after Rage was to go on to hold residencies at some of the UK’s seminal Drum & Bass events; Tru Playaz @ Fabric, Metalheadz @ London, Renegade Hardware & T.O.V. @ The End Club, Mass, London & Prototype & Grace events @ Fabric & Herbal, London. Going on to be the tour MC world-wide for his peers was a major highlight for Rage performing with DJ Hype (Tru Playaz/KISS FM), Fabio (Radio 1/Swerve), Goldie (Metalheadz), DJ Storm (Metalheadz) & the legendary Grooverider (Radio 1/Prototype/Grace). Rage’s lyrical skills got him to travel the globe touching down in Europe, USA, Japan, Australia & New Zealand, South America, Russia & Dubai.
From early 2000 right through to 2004 Rage went onto to appear at festivals throughout the UK & Europe; Creamfields (Dublin & Liverpool, UK), Homelands (Winchester, UK), Dance Valley (Amsterdam, Holland), Rotterdam Street Parade (Holland) & world-wide ‘Big Day Out’ (Australia & New Zealand). This gave RAGE the opportunity to tour alongside Chemical Brothers, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Primal Scream & Basement Jaxx. Raising his profile this got him noticed by Coca-Cola who incorporated Rage into a global Coca-Cola campaign.
Continuing to work with Fabio & Grooverider gave Rage the opportunity to host their Radio 1 Live broadcasts in the UK & Europe including the BBC’s Exit Festival events. In addition to appearing as a guest on several occasions & compiling a series of regular jingles featured on Fabio & Grooverider’s show broadcast world-wide via Radio 1 weekly on Friday nights 1am – 3am. Quote “BBC – Beats, Bass & Culture” – MC Rage.
In 2005 he set his sights on the world of music production, something that has always intrigued him. Keeping it in the family Rage set-up a music/film production unit called ‘Related Music’ with his younger brother (insert his artist/producer name) & 5/6 of his closest friends under the name ‘Basllisq’. By doing so this it enabled ‘Basllisq’ to produce music for the likes of; Estelle, Dizzy Rascal, Dynamite & Roll Deep also the mighty Def Jam label. Rage is currently developing his band ‘Innercity Dwellers’ a politically & socially aware outfit that fuses hip-hop & rock…straight outta ‘East London’.
